On Saturday 8/22/2026 at 2:27 pm we were called out for a missing hiker on the Cove to Lake Trail in La Quinta, a 6.5-mile moderately challenging out-and-back hike in the desert. The missing hiker had become separated from her hiking companion when she sped ahead. When the second hiker arrived back at the parking lot and she was not present, he reported her missing at about 11:30 am. An aerial search by a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter and Riverside Sheriff’s Office (RSO) patrol helicopter did not find her, and more resources were summoned.
Members of RMRU and Desert Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DSSAR) met RSO personnel at the trailhead and quickly established a Command Post (CP) and composed field teams. RSO Rescue9 helicopter arrived, did a short aerial search, and then took on board a member of DSSAR who was familiar with the area. Before any field teams could be deployed, Rescue9 located the missing hiker and confirmed that she was deceased.
The air temperature that afternoon on the fully sun-exposed trail exceeded 115°F. RMRU would like to remind the public that heat stroke can occur very quickly and with little warning, over as little as 10-15 minutes. It is best to arrange your outdoor activity for very early morning or late evening, or defer your activity to a cooler day. We extend our condolences to family and friends.
RMRU Members Involved: Jonathan Butler, Alex Cochran, Nathaniel Desorges, Matthew Dunlap, Dave Kosmal, Ethan Kosmal, Jeff Leisner, and Richard Yocum
