On the afternoon of March 17th, RMRU received a call for two hikers reported overdue in snowy conditions above the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. A concerned friend had called 911 after losing contact with the pair.
As the team began organizing a response, we reached out to the reporting party. Fortunately, they answered and informed us that the hikers had managed to find their way back to the Tram on their own. No field deployment was necessary.
Takeaway: If you call emergency services for a missing person and later receive an update—such as the person returning or self-rescuing—please notify authorities right away. This simple step helps avoid unnecessary risk to rescue personnel and ensures resources are used efficiently.
