The mission began when RMRU received a distress call about a stranded hiker near Red Tahquitz Peak along the Pacific Crest Trail, approximately 6-7 miles from Humber Park. Three RMRU members responded: Colby managed base operations, while James and I were dispatched into the field to locate and assist the subject.

Upon reaching the trailhead, both James and Tobias made direct contact with the subject via cell phone. The hiker, who had spent a stormy night exposed to severe weather, was understandably shaken. The high winds from the storm had broken their tent, leaving them vulnerable to the elements. After assessing the situation, the team decided it was safest to hike to the subject’s location and escort them back to Humber Park.

The hike up to the subject was a mix of beauty and challenge, with a fresh blanket of snow covering the trail and surrounding terrain. When James and I reached the subject, we provided basic first aid and prepared for the journey back.

The decision to remain in place had been a smart one on the subject’s part, as the route leading out of their location was particularly technical and treacherous. To safely navigate this section, the team employed a short-rope technique, with the subject tied to James. This setup allowed James to use his ice axe and self-arrest skills to protect against a potentially serious fall on the snow-covered pass.

With the most dangerous section behind them, the team began the long hike back to Humber Park. The snow had obscured all visible signs of the trail, so the team relied heavily on GPS tracks to find their way. Despite the challenges, James, Tobias, and the subject returned safely to Humber Park at approximately 12:00 PM, just as the weather deteriorated further with thick fog, snow, and rain.

The mission was a success, thanks to the team’s prompt response, careful planning, and effective execution, ensuring the safe return of the subject.
